We choose the Mount Morris Park Historic Walking Tour.

When I was growing up on Long Island over 20 years ago this neighborhood was too dangerous to visit, and many of the beautiful buildings were abandoned and this historic district was known more for crime and drugs.

The community here has taken back their neighborhood while keeping its local flavor .A great many of  beautiful Renaissance buildings have been restored, and the parks are now a place for families to bring their children for a walk, theater or event.

Harlem is famous for it’s music (Jazz and Gospel)  as well as it’s food.  This I knew, but what I didn’t expect was the beautiful brownstone buildings, parks and Churches .

This neighborhood has a vibe all it’s own.

A great website to get a feel for what makes each neighborhood in NYC unique is TimeoutNY

The tour was over 90 minutes and the tour guide we had was very informative ,clearly loved the neighborhood that she has been living in her whole life.

Our tour guide was nice enough to let us know as we were ending the tour that one thing that most people don’t know about Harlem is how connected it is to the NYC transit system.  She pointed to a bus stop on the corner that we could hop on that would take us all the way back  to the Lowest East Side where our Hotel was.

Take the time to get to know the Bus and subway system while in NYC.  Taxis are costly

and during peak traffic times can take you 20 minutes to go 10 blocks.  We took a subway from the Lower East Side to Harlem which took about 35 minutes (cost $2.50 ) .  This same trip in a taxi would have taken double the amount of time and most likely would have cost $30.00

While researching for this weekend trip,I was amazed at how many different types of tours are available.

For the first time in my life ,on this trip I went on the Double- decker open air bus tour.

I’ve seen these buses around the city from the time I was a kid, and honestly it wasn’t on my short list of tours I wanted to go on.  I was so wrong!  This bus tour was an absolute blast and a definite highlight of our trip.  Both of the girlfriends I was with have lived in New York their whole lives and also had never been on the tour.  It was our plan to be tourists this weekend.

From the open-air top deck of our tour bus, you’ll have spectacular views of twinkling lights and top landmarks, like Times Square, Madison Square Garden, Rockefeller Center, the Flatiron Building and Union Square! See iconic attractions like the Empire State Building lit up in elegant white or, on special occasions, illuminated with brilliant colors. Friendly and well-versed tour guides will point out every sight and offer interesting commentary.

There are many bus tour Companies.  We went with

City Sights NY

Address: 234 W 42nd St, New York, NY 10036
This Company sometimes has a listing on Groupon.  The tickets on the Citysightsny website note the pricing of the *Night Tour* (the name of the tour we went on) as $49.00 for each adult.  We paid $17.00 each.  Groupon vouchers are typically good for up to a year.
We started looking for New York City groupons for tours ,restaurants and other activities as soon as we booked our flights.

If you are new to Groupon you can click the link below to sign up and start looking for your next adventure, either for some local fun or for your next Holiday.

We saved a lot of money on our trip by looking for deals.  We like nice Hotels and good seats for shows and good food.  Finding great deals on many of the things we did allowed us to splurge on other fun, plus it feels great to know you got a great deal.

From Manhattan, you’ll cross the East River into Brooklyn, giving you the perfect opportunity to look out on the magnificent Brooklyn Bridge – which appears especially impressive at night. From Brooklyn, you’re in for the best view of the evening: An unimpeded panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline!

Going over the bridge felt like a ride at an amusement park.  It was fun ,and a little bit scary.  You realize high high up you are sitting when going over the bridge.
